Graveside services for Gerald “Jerry” L. Matthews, 76, of Hastings, Neb., will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at Bonner Springs Cemetery.
Mr. Matthews died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Grand Island, Neb.
He was born Jan. 12, 1932, in Carrollton, Mo. Mr. Matthews served his nation for more than 13 years in the U.S. Navy, and after being discharged, he joined the U.S. Merchant Marines. He served in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Mr. Matthews was a life member of Hastings, Neb., Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his mother and brother.
Survivors include three sons, Jerry C. Matthews, Clatskanie, Ore., David L. Matthews, Overland Park, Kan., and Charles “Kevin” Matthews, Bonner Springs; seven grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
The family suggests contributions to the American Lung Association.
