Balthasar George Lies 1926 - 2009 Newton

Services for Balthasar George Lies, 82, were July 28 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Newton. Burial was at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Newton.
Mr. Lies died Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan
He was born Oct. 1, 1926, in Clonmel, the son of Balthasar J. and Katherine (Girrens) Lies.
Mr. Lies was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Kansas City and attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He retired as a truck driver and worked at the Bonner Springs Thriftway Grocery Store for nine years.
On July 31, 1960, he married Mareta L. Gatz in Newton. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Michael Lies, of Pleasant Valley, Mo.; sisters, Catherine Scheffler, of Newton, Adelaide Schroeder of Liberty, Mo., and Mary Dolores Gatz, of Newton; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Lies.
