Mass of Christian Burial for Marie Helen Macan, 98, Kansas City, Kan., will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Shawnee. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Miss Macan died Friday, Aug. 27, 2010.
She was born Nov. 14, 1911, the daughter of Izadore and Mary (Medved) Macan in Kansas City, Kan.
Miss Macan grew up on the family farm and graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1931. After High School she did secretarial work for various firms in Kansas City. She passed a civil service examination for the Department of Defense in 1945 and worked for the next 40 years for the Navy and Army as a civilian secretary. She served in Hawii, occupied Japan, Washington, D.C., and was in Germany for more than 30 years. Through the years she received many commendations for her excellent work and served with officers in the highest echelons of the Army. She never married.
Miss Macan returned to Kansas City after her retirement and took up residence in Bonner Springs in the late 1980's. She lived there until 2005 when she became a resident of Providence Place in Kansas City, Kan.
Marie was a devoted servant and lifelong member of the Catholic Church, most recently attending Sacred Heart of Jesus parish in Shawnee.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Nina (Macan) Liston, and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, Kansas City, Kan.
