Walter Backus 1930 - 2010 Olathe

Services for Walter Backus, 79, Olathe, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, at Community Covenant Church, 15700 W. 87th St. Parkway, Lenexa. Burial will be in Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens.
Mr. Backus died Saturday, May 15, 2010, at Select Specialty Hospital, Kansas City, Kan.
He was born Sept. 19, 1930, in Meridan, the son of Raymond Frank and Minnie (Riddle) Backus. He was a 1948 graduate of Seaman High School in Topeka.
Mr. Backus was employed with Manor Bakery and in 1964 became an agent with Bankers Life & Casualty Insurance Co. He also owned and operated Walt’s Landscaping and Lawn Service. He retired in 1993.
He enjoyed playing golf, bowling and online pinochle, where he was fondly known as Gramps9Iron. He was proud of having made two holes in one and bowling a perfect game.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Lou (Hoover) Backus; four children, Michael E. (Sophia) Backus, Bonner Springs, David A. (Joyce M.) Backus, Overland Park, Patti (Rob) McWilliams, and Daniel E. Backus, all of Olathe, KS; three sisters, Geraldine (Joe) Malvasia, Niles, Ohio, Gwendolyn (Larry) McClurg and Edith Beaty, both of Meridan; a brother, Bruce Backus, Ypsi-lanti, Mich.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, at Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.
