John Robert Stubbs 1920 - 2011 Leawood
Mass of Christian burial for John Robert Stubbs, 91, Leawood, formerly of Bonner Springs, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Lansing. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Lansing.
Mr. Stubbs died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 5, 1920, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Fred E. and Estella Stubbs. They moved in 1923 to Bonner Springs, where his father opened what later became Stubbs Feed and Coal.
Mr. Stubbs graduated from Bonner Springs High School in 1938. He was a talented musician playing clarinet and saxophone and started playing professionally when he was 12 years old in downtown Kansas City. He later joined a big band and toured the country. He then attended Benedictine College and the University of Kansas until WW2 intervened. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps, where he became a B-25 pilot. After the war in 1945 he returned to Bonner Springs to work and run the family business with his mother Estella. In 1956 it was incorporated as “Valley Feed and Supply.”
He married Margaret A. Montgomery on June 11, 1949. She preceded him in death.
Survivors include four sons, John A. (Darlene) Stubbs Shawnee, the Rev. Michael C. Stubbs, Overland Park, Thomas Jerry Stubbs, Lawrence, and Neal (Marty) Stubbs, Olathe; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
There will be a wake service followed by a visitation at 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Alden-Harrington Funeral Home in Bonner Springs.
