Marilyn Murphy Sullivan 1950 - 2011 Fort Collins, Colo.

Marilyn Murphy Sullivan, 61, of Fort Collins, Colorado, died at home on October 27, 2011, surrounded by family. Marilyn was born on September 23, 1950, in Kansas City, Kansas, the daughter of Daniel and Blanche Murphy. Marilyn was always a person looking to expand her world through reading, education, and an exploration of the world around her. In 1968 she left her home and enrolled at Kansas State University earning a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and then continued on to earn her Master’s degree. Looking to experience the world, Marilyn took her adventures to places all across the globe which included teaching in Australia for a year and a half and then camping around the world in places like Iraq and Iran. Eventually she returned home and began teaching in Atchison, Kansas. It is there that she met the love of her life, John L. Sullivan whom she married on June 2, 1979.
Together their adventures continued and took them overseas to Department of Defense Dependant Schools in Germany, where they both taught the next 30 years together, 29 of which were at Würzburg American High School. Würzburg became the place they truly considered their home and began to raise a family. As a teacher Marilyn touched the lives of her students through her passion for the written word and an expectation of excellence that constantly challenged students to achieve at their highest level. Living in Germany also allowed Marilyn to continue to pursue her love of world cultures and to share that passion with her husband and children. After 30 years of teaching in Germany she and John retired to Fort Collins.
Marilyn is survived by her husband John, daughters Megan Godlewski, Kathleen Phillips, and Erin Sullivan, step-son John Sullivan, grandchildren Trent, Ashlyn, Tyler, and Alice, mother Blanche, brothers, Daniel, James, and Richard, and sisters Janet Turini, Carol Westfall, and Norene Ryks.
