Barbara Jean Distefano 1934 - 2011 Basehor

Funeral Mass for Barbara Jean Distefano, 76, Basehor, will be 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at Holy Angels Catholic Church, Basehor. Burial will be in Mt. Washington, Cemetery, Kansas City, Mo.
Mrs. Distefano died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, at her home.
She was born Oct. 29, 1934, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughters of Wesley and Bea Harrell.
She was active in dance, pageantry and the Literary Society at East High School in Kansas City, Mo., graduating in 1952. She enrolled in nurse’s training at Trinity Lutheran Hospital, where she received her cap and pin in 1954.
She married Anthony V. Distefano in 1955 at Assumption Catholic Church in Old Northeast, Kansas City, Mo., Together they raised five children, and owned and operated their independent family pharmacy in Kansas City, Kan. Following her retirement from the drugstore, she enjoyed her husband, family and vacations. She later volunteered and then was employed at the National Agricultural Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs. In the last five years she was a dedicated and tireless caregiver for her son, Michael, a traumatic brain injury patient.
Her husband, Anthony, died in 1997. A son, Dante, died in 1979.
Survivors include four children Vicki Perbeck (Mark) and Mike Distefano, both of Fairway, Tony Distefano, Tonganoxie, and Becky Distefano, Paola, Kan.; a sister, Judith Rhea, Kansas City, Mo.; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24, prior to the Mass at the church.
