Willis H. Hart 1924 - 2013
Willis H. Hart passed away on January 3, 2013 at the age of 88. He was born to Charles C. and Jessie M. Hart on October 9, 1924, in Newton, Kansas. He was an avid sports enthusiast from an early age, playing football on the Newton High School team and golfing through high school. He started college at Kansas State University, but his education there was interrupted by 4 years of service in the U. S. Navy during World War II. Much of his service was aboard the USS Bunker Hill, an aircraft carrier fighting in the Pacific theater. The carrier was badly damaged by enemy air attacks during his time aboard, becoming the worst damaged ship of its size to survive the war.
He finished his education at KSU after the war with degrees in Chemical Engineering and Business Administration. He met his wife of 63 years at Kansas State, and they moved to Overland Park, Kansas, in 1951.
He began a 46 year career with Thompson Hayward Chemical Company and its successors shortly after moving to the Kansas City area. He enjoyed an integral part of the growth from a regional, family owned chemical company to a worldwide manufacturer and distributor.
Flying was a lifelong passion, which eclipsed his love of golf after his daughter and son were in college. He was an enthusiastic part of the Civil Air Patrol Search and Rescue, and enjoyed flying with his friends as much as piloting his own planes. His association with the Quiet Birdmen was a special part of his life.
He is survived by his loving wife JoAnne, daughter Dianne, son Greg and his wife Vicky, as well as grandson Gerald. He relished friends made throughout his life from Newton, Kansas, Kansas State University, his fraternity, his professional career, and his flying.
Memorial services will be at 1:00 pm, Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Alden- Harrington Funeral Home in Bonner Springs, KS with a family committal to follow at a later date.
