Elizabeth Clevenger Carbery 1921 - 2013 Bonner Springs

(Bette), age 92 of Bonner Springs, Kansas died on May 22, 2013 at Lake of the Forest surrounded by loving friends and family. A memorial service was held at St. Martin in-the-Field 1501 Edwardsville Drive in Edwardsville, KS at 7 pm on Tuesday, May 28th. The family received friends prior to the service, beginning at 6 pm, at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bonner Springs Public Library in care of Alden-Harrington Funeral Home 214 Oak Street Bonner Springs, KS 66012.
Bette was born on March 9, 1921 in Newport, TN. She graduated from Maryville College in 1943 and began her career working for a family business, Bush Brothers, of Dandridge, TN. Shortly after the War, she became a flight attendant with American Airlines, based in New York City. It was there that she met the love of her life, Charles (Buddy) Carbery. The stylish, young couple moved to Lawrence, KS in 1948. They had the good fortune of finding Lake of the Forest in 1951. After raising a family, Bette worked for the USD #204 as a librarian. She was an active volunteer, giving her time to special education, the Bonner Springs Public Library, P.E.O., St. Martin’s and her beloved Lake of the Forest. Bette and Bud were vital members of the Lake community for over 62 years. The Carberys were loving examples of conviviality, sophisticated humor and elegance of a bygone era. Bette was a fiercely loyal friend and mentor to generations of those who knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mack and Georgia Mae Woody Clevenger and husband, Charles William Carbery. Survivors include her children, Stuart Craig Carbery, Mimi Carbery Guste, and Suzanne Carbery Emery; her son-in-law, Jonathan W. Emery, and her three grandchildren, Jonathan, Elizabeth and Kathryn Emery.
