Herman “Gale” Knoche 1939 - 2013

Herman “Gale” Knoche passed away surrounded by loving family at Kansas City Hospice House on May 15, 2013. Gale was born October 12, 1939 in the family home in Bonner Springs, Kansas. He was the son of Robert Mathias Knoche and Ruth Evelyn Bettis. Gale spent his early years in the Piper, Kansas area then moved with his family to Basehor, Kansas in 1950. There, the family had a farm and milked dairy cows.
Growing up, Gale was active in 4H and was a member of Key Club. He graduated Basehor High School in 1957 and later married his high school sweetheart, Becky Prater.
Gale had been a member of the Basehor Lions Club since 1973 and was a member of the Fairmount Township Fire Department, where he served as Fire Chief for a number of years. He also served as a member of the board for Consolidated Rural Water District No. 1. Gale belonged to Hoisting and Portable Engineers Local Union 101 and made his living as a heavy equipment operator.
Gale and Becky married and established their home in 1958. They labored to maintain an old farmstead while raising a family and saving for their future dream home. This dream was realized when they built a new ranch house on land that had belonged to Gale’s grandfather. Though they worked hard they took time to enjoy dancing, water skiing, and playing cards with family and friends.
After Gale’s retirement in 2000 he and Becky enjoyed traveling and took many trips with family and the Tongie Travelers. Gale enjoyed tending his garden and he especially loved spending time with his horses. As a member of the Carriage and Driving Club of Kansas City he participated in many local parades, of which his favorite was the Christmas Parade in Lawrence and he drove his horse and buggy in this for 15 years.
Gale spent time in his shop handcrafting birdhouses and yard art from barn wood that was salvaged from his grandfather’s barn. These projects were kept as a surprise until given as Christmas gifts and were much coveted by the family. Of all his accomplishments, Gale was proudest of his children and greatly enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gale was a true and faithful friend and a loving, giving husband, father, and grandfather. His work ethic, kindness, sense of humor and generosity was admired by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Evelyn Knoche; his brother-in-law, Dick McCubbin; and his grandson, Kevin Swope. He is survived by his wife, Becky, and son, Jason, of the home; daughters Pam (Mike) Swisher, Wamego, Kansas, and Carla (Jim) Kaiser, Basehor, Kansas; brother Robert (Vicki) Knoche, Cedar City, Utah; sisters Betty Ann McCubbin, Bellevue, Nebraska, and Judy Curtis, Jamesport, Missouri; grandchildren Jodi (Travis) Graham, and Abigail and Valerie Swisher; great-grandchildren Kameron Swope, and Logan, Harper, and Ainslee Graham. He also leaves behind much-beloved nieces and nephews.
