Richard VanTuyl 1936 - 2013
Richard VanTuyl went to be with the Lord on September 14, 2013. He was an extraordinary man and an exemplary husband, father, and grandfather, as well as, a good friend to many. His kind spirit and gentle nature will be missed by all who knew him. His memory will be cherished in our hearts forever. His life began, October 22, 1936, the day he was born to William and Hilda VanTuyl. He was the youngest of 10 children, was raised in the Basehor area, and graduated from Basehor High School.
In 1958, he married Mary Hall, and they have spent a wonderful life together raising their 3 children Rick, Dale and Connie. They traveled to many places , and enjoyed doing things together as a family such as camping, and farming. He cherished his family and was delighted to be surrounded by them throughout his life and especially at the end of his life. He and Mary had recently celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary.
Richard belonged to the Carpenter Union local 499 and held many offices though out the years. He was a carpenter foreman for 36 years and was a true craftsman. He retired from JE Dunn Construction Co. in 1995.
He was also very active in the Nine Mile 4-H club as a leader teaching kids about woodworking, beef and horsemanship. He was a member of the Leavenworth Saddle Club and served as the president. He and Mary had a small farm south of Leavenworth and for many years raised cattle.
Mary survives him on their farm. He is also survived by his children, Rick (Tammy) VanTuyl, Dale (Carmela) VanTuyl, and Connie (Rodney) Mersman all of Leavenworth. He has 3 grandchildren, Joshua (Jenna Gnip) VanTuyl, Leavenworth, Alisha (Steven) Bauswell, Okinawa and Dillon Mersman, Leavenworth. One great-granddaughter Morgan Bauswell, whom he got a big kick out spending time with. He is survived by one sister, and her husband, Jean and (Howard) Theno, a sisters-in-law Florence VanTuyl, and brother-in-law Alan Eklund. His siblings and their spouses, Bill VanTuyl, Dorothy and (Francis) McNamee, Bob and(Dorothy) VanTuyl, Howard “Bud” and (Gerry) VanTuyl, Mary and (Hugh) Ohler, Betty and (Ed) Scheller, Edna Eklund, Martha and (Vernon Clark), along with his parents William and Hilda, preceded him in death.
Richard accepted Christ as his Savior at a very young age. His favorite song was the Old Rugged Cross and his favorite scripture was Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Visitation will be Wed., Sept. 18th 6:00 -8:00pm at Davis Funeral Chapel Services will be at Davis Funeral Home, on Thurs., Sept. 19,2013, at 10:30am In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to:
