What do you think of the city's plan to ask employees for a furlough day on Christmas Eve in order to save money?

Since it is voluntary there is no reason not to ask employees. It would also allow for a four-day weekend, which is enticing. Generally Christmas Eve is a nonproductive work day at many businesses.

The $70,000 of potential savings seems on the high side, but if only one half of that is saved, it will help the city's financial problems and also please those employees who are financially able to lose a day's pay.

I think the bigger question is whether City Hall should be closed on Christmas Eve.
