Do you think Shawnee should consider a law banning cell phone use while driving?

Pam Cooper ( in ) says...
“Isn't there a general law already that says you have to pay attention when you're driving? Why single out cell phones over eating, putting on makeup, or any number of things people manage to try while driving?”
Leon Logan ( in ) says...
“I do not support the cell phone ban. I think that it would be hard to enforce unless some technology is developed which would allow the police to identify which cars have drivers who are using a cell phone. The statistics show that there is only a small percentage of accidents as the result of drivers who are using their cell phones, let's avoid another set of laws which would most likely give rise to the need for more police officers, and therefore cause even higher taxes.”
Russ Revis ( in ) says...
“No. There are laws covering reckless and careless driving in Municipal Code already. What are we gaining with a new ban?”
Peter Ehrlich ( in Shawnee) says...
“It would be difficult, at best, to enforce a ban in the city only. Signage throughout Shawnee is impractical. A statewide law makes much more sense banning hand-held devices.”
Tom Martin ( in Shawnee) says...
“I don't think the City should ban the use of cell phones while driving. I would be supportive of an ordinance that bans texting while driving.”
Kent Zimmerman ( in Shawnee) says...
“I agree that cell phone use while driving should be banned — definitely hand-held devices — but I think it would need to be done on a statewide or nationwide basis. Otherwise, enforcement would be next to impossible.”
