Alyssa Foster says the news is frequently on her family’s TV, and her knowledge of current events is one thing that helped her express ideas about patriotism and national pride in her VFW Patriot’s Pen essay this year, her father, Chris, said. Her essay won the Patriot’s Pen competition for Kansas VFW District 1, making her one of nine competitors to move on to the state contest.
