New church awe-inspiring

The new Risen Savior Lutheran Church in Basehor, which is now open and nearly complete, is truly awe-inspiring, according to the many congregants who got a look at the church over the weekend.

My grandfather, Asmus Marxen, was the first of eight men to sign the May 8, 1908, Constitution of St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Basehor, Kansas, following the Rev. Carl Demetrio, Jr. He was elected to a three-year term as one of three elders. In 1912, the land transferred between Moses Harvey and Asmus Marxen and he leased the land to the church for $1 a year until it was sold by his family.

Two of my uncles, Rev. Gustav Hafner, who was married to my father's sister, Anna, and Rev. Wilson Maurer, who was my mother's brother, also served as pastors at St. Martin's.

My parents, Walter E. A. Marxen and Theda A. G. Maurer left St. Martin's to help establish Bethel Lutheran Church, Bethel, Kansas, along with their three daughters: Darlene Theda, Gloria Ann, and Joyce Yvonne.

When the Kansas Commission of Adjudication for The Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod awarded all the property to the appellees (St. Martin's - Berner) on October 6th, 1977, but it was never relinquished by the appellants, (St. Martin's - Roschke), my father stated: "I didn't leave my church. My church left me." It broke his heart to have his father's property stolen from those members who were faithful to the Constitution and the doctrine of the Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod.

Subsequently, they left Bethel to help establish Emmaus Lutheran Church, of Bonner Springs, Kansas. Though now sainted and enjoying their eternal life in heaven with Christ, my parents would rejoice knowing Emmaus has become a part of Risen Savior Lutheran Church.

Praise God for His marvelous works!
