Walt Stephen stands near one of about 10 bee colonies on his property in Bonner Springs; he has 40 overall, the others located on farms in Leavenworth and Douglas counties. What started out as a method to pollonize his apple trees turned into a lucrative side business and has earned Stephen and his wife first-place ribbons for the best honey products at the Kansas State Fair.
