Celebrating Kansas January 30, 2008
Students across Leavenworth County mark the state's birthday.
Allison Diamond, 6, dressed in pioneer clothing on Tuesday, Jan. 29 as part of the celebration at Lansing Elementary School for Kansas Day. The first-grader and her classmates from Nancy Collard's class learned all about Kansas geography and the state symbols and participated in Kansas-related activities throughout the day.
Vernilee Fuhlhage, a volunteer at the Tonganoxie Area Historic Site, reads to McLouth Elementary School third-grade students during Kansas Day activities Tuesday, Jan. 29 on the historic site campus in Tonganoxie. After Fuhlhage spoke with students, they ate Johnny cakes, which fellow volunteer Connie Putthoff prepared for students. Johnny cakes are like pancakes, but are made from cornmeal.
Nancy Collard explains a Kansas Day activity to her Lansing Elementary School first-grade students Tuesday, Jan. 29 while dressed in a traditional pioneer costume. The class learned about the official state symbols and made flip books including pictures of each one to celebrate Kansas Day, which was on Tuesday.
Barbara Dale tells McLouth Elementary School students about life in a one-room schoolhouse at the Tonganoxie Community Historic Site. Dale and other volunteers dressed in mid-1880s period clothing as part of activities for the McLouth students.
Dane Goebel, 7, used watercolors Tuesday, Jan. 29 to paint a sunflower during the Kansas Day activities with Jennifer Leitsch's first-grade class at Lansing Elementary School.
Basehor Elementary School first-graders Jaxon Bounds and Beck Shorney stand in line Tuesday, Kansas Day, to collect doughnuts and coat them with sugar by shaking them in plastic bags. The students also honored Kansas' birthday by dressing up as cowboys and cowgirls and making paper sunflowers and Jayhawk puppets.
