Vernilee Fuhlhage, a volunteer at the Tonganoxie Area Historic Site, reads to McLouth Elementary School third-grade students during Kansas Day activities Tuesday, Jan. 29 on the historic site campus in Tonganoxie. After Fuhlhage spoke with students, they ate Johnny cakes, which fellow volunteer Connie Putthoff prepared for students. Johnny cakes are like pancakes, but are made from cornmeal.
