Mayoral forum gets heated

People, people, this is another attempt to draw the voters attention away from the issue at hand and embroiled on subjects that have no bearing on the attributes of a Mayor. It should be noted the Mayor of Basehor has no vote on subjects which come before the City Council unless there is a tie vote. Recognize, we in Basehor only budget for a volunteer part time mayor. The mayor’s job is to insure the decision of the Council are implemented as ordered, act on legal documents as directed and work with the city staff to run the administrative activities. In addition they are to look to the future and bring plans to the Council for discussion and direction. So let’s stop spending time on stuff which has no bearing on who will do the best job. The last 9 months have shown great progress for our city under the leadership of Mayor Breuer let’s make sure it continues. John E Flower

Basehor council members deny recall accusations at town-hall meeting

Hello, all the above quotes virtually discuss everything but the issues. Let’s get back to what we are voting on and what we are not.
1. Iris and Dennis recall vote is, whether or not they violated KOMA by discussing/deciding the firing of Mark Loughry outside of Council or Executive meetings.
2. Terry’s recall vote is based on did he alter a contract in a manner he knew was different than he believed was negotiated. The second charge was; he directed/authorized a severance check be written to Loughry without Council approval.
These are the two recall issues. All the rest of the information or misinformation is not relevant to this election. The other items would be information to use in a Primary and then a General election. To use the information for this election to circumvent the General election is a disservice to the Officers’ as well as the citizens of Basehor.
Now let’s see what the evidence is on the counts.
1. Did Iris and Dennis discuss/decide Loughry’s firing outside Council meetings? They say no. Their opposition indicates the timing is too coincidental for there not to have been complicity. So it’s as simple as you believe one or the other.
The charges on the other recall vote are not so cut and dried.
2. Terry has indicated he believed the negotiating team agreed to the extension of benefits to Loughry and was simply correcting what he felt was an accidental omission. Members of the Council have had almost 3 years to place this on the Council Agenda if they really wanted it changed. The lack of action is tantamount to agreement.
The issuing of the check was required by contract. Dennis Mertz took issue with the amount, which, has since been validated as originally correct. It is anticipated the final check will come before the Council in the near future for an additional amount which together with the modified check will equal the amount of the first check. Consequently, it was correct from the beginning.
So let’s go vote on the issues not all the untruths, half truths, innuendos, and lies. Let’s just vote the issues of the recalls and leave the rest for the Primary election.

No decision made on airport studies as county waits for cities to agree on site

A critical word, of what I said, is left out of the above article it should read as follows.

"But he said that if the cities could not agree, he would NOT want the county to support the project forward, and it could be up to one of the cities to sponsor and fund further studies."

The missing of the word "not" completely changes what I said. Typos happen.

Thank you for your coverage of our proceeding so the citizens of southern Leavenworth County now what is going on with their county Government.

Letter: Basehor mayor addresses recall charges

I find it interesting the “Recall Hill Group” is continuing to bring up the spending issue when it has been disallow from the recall petition. The only two items on the recall ballot issue are the notation on the CA contract, since reconfirmed 4 times by the full council. The second item on the ballot is the Mayors direction to the staff to prepare the severance check, on advice of counsel, for the CA as dictated by contract for the amount now found to have been correct in the first place.
To the cost issue I also find it interesting the same people who are complaining were part of the decision making on virtually all of these expenses. The retreat at Falcon Lake was attended by the council members; in fact the council dictated where they wanted the retreat. The advertising in Ingram’s was approved by the Council; the computers were voted on and approved by the council.
This is serious business and reflects on our community throughout the metropolitan area and state. If you are upset about the spending go to the council meeting and say so, be an active participant but don't join a stoning where none in warranted. Please keep these facts in mind as you go to the polls to vote but do vote.
