Walt Carrigan, operator of Walt's Plumbing, recently removed these two water heaters from a Lansing home. Carrigan said the heater on the right, with the kinked flue and bulbous bottom, is an example of what can happen when a heater isn't outfitted with a thermal expansion device but the water meter has a dual check valve installed. A kinked flue can lead to the leaking of dangerous carbon monoxide into the house, he said.
