With state wrestling tournaments set to begin today, catch up on profiles this season of several area wrestlers who will be competing for championships this weekend.
• Bonner Springs’ Aaron Puckett wins Bobcat Classic in O.T., still undefeated: On Jan. 12 BSHS senior Aaron Puckett won his first career Bobcat Classic title with just two seconds left in a sudden death overtime period. Today, Puckett (37-0) begins a final bid at a state title as the top seed in the Class 4A 160-pound bracket in Salina.
• Sam, Ed Seaton’s final run together: Basehor-Linwood senior Sam Seaton will take a 26-9 record into the 4A state tournament in Salina, joined by his father and assistant BLHS coach Ed Seaton. Earlier this season, on senior night, the two reflected of their time spent together in the gym.
• LaPhonso McKinnis has nothing to hide: Less than a year after nearly getting kicked off the team for theft, SM Northwest junior LaPhonso McKinnis opens up about his past while discussing plans for his future. The 170-pounder has been in the Class 6A rankings all season, winning a pair of tournaments and carrying a 34-9 record into the tournament in Wichita.
• Mill Valley junior becomes only girl in state bracket: Mill Valley junior Kali Gracy’s opportunity came just in time to qualify for the 5A state tournament, a goal she’s had for years. Read about how she got into the sport and why she’s stuck with it all these years.
